HAIR AND MAKEUP
On this page you will find detailed information on how to fix your dancer’s hair and apply their makeup for picture day, as well as the dress rehearsal and dance recital.
However, if you find yourself feeling that the hair and makeup deal is a bit overwhelming and just don’t feel like dealing with it at all… No worries!!!... You can arrange to have us take care of your dancer’s hair and makeup from start to finish! We will have “bun makers” and “makeup artists” in our ‘Salon’ who will completely take care of your dancer’s hair and makeup for only $15/appointment. Performance Hair Guidelines
Uniform hairstyles are required for all performances. All dancers must wear their hair in a bun, NO bangs. Dancers with very short hair must pull their hair away from their face in a short ponytail and bangs must be slicked back off of the forehead pinned down and sprayed well with hairspray to keep them back. (Dancers wearing hats must have a very low bun - situated at the nape of the neck.) For Bun Making Instructions - Click HERE Performance Make-Up All female students are required to wear make-up for picture day, dress rehearsal and dance recital (vitally important to insure uniformity) and also helps prevent the dancers from looking “washed out” under the bright photographer's lighting on picture day and the stage lighting for rehearsal and recital. You will be asked to follow the guidelines we provide in the recital handbook (which we send home in March) using the colors indicated. We understand that many parents/guardians are not comfortable with the idea of children wearing makeup however please be assured that it is part of their costume (similar to Halloween - we wouldn’t send out our kitty cats out without their whiskers or nose!). Be assured that the makeup is for stage effects only and most of the dancers look forward to “dressing up” and being able to put on makeup. Here are some quick and tips that should make recital makeup application easier. Ages 2 – 6 Keep the makeup simple on these little ones! This age group needs to be distracted when you are applying their makeup. You may want to have them think of their favorite song and as long as you’re not doing their lips, they can sing it for you while you do their eyes. Any kind of mental distraction will work so that they are not focused on the fact that you are poking them with makeup brushes. Eyes: Brown eye shadow only on eye lid blended up to the crease will help frame the eye and will make their lash line look fuller. White eye shadow can be used to highlight the brow bone under the eye brow. Mascara is not necessary. If they will sit still long enough, use a chocolate brown pencil liner on their upper lash line and the same liner under the eye start at center of eye and go to outside corner of eye – only half way under eye to keep eyes looking large. Ages 7 – 18 Eyes: same as above, but go ahead and add mascara (black or brown) and chocolate brown eye liner on top lash line. Colors can be applied more intensely. Add a gold eye shadow to inner corners of eye and underneath. This makes eyes really stand out! Use only matte powders and eyeshadows. No shimmer or glitter please. All Ages Cheeks: You want to choose medium rose tones for cheeks-nothing too bright and nothing too dark. Take your brush and start at the hair line and sweep forward under cheek bone and swirl upward over apples. Blend upwards to make sure blush color does not go lower than lip line on the cheek. Blend well to avoid any harsh lines. Lips: Staying with medium rose color use a lip liner to outline lips then fill in entire lip to keep your dancer’s lipstick on longer then apply lipstick on top of that. ______________________ Remember – if you don’t have the confidence to handle your dancer’s hair and makeup, we will take care of it for you for a $15 fee.
